Marla Berns About

Marla Berns, LISW, Certified Health Coach

I know what it’s like to struggle with eating emotionally.

Stress eating was my thing all throughout high school and college. I was a huge procrastinator, often pulling all nighters to get my work done. What did I do while procrastinating? You guessed it – I ate. Popcorn, crackers, M & Ms, pretzels. Just a little snack first and then I’ll start studying, I told myself.

This pattern carried through to my adult years, when I ate to deal with the stress of work and raising children.

When I was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer at age 41, I did a deep dive into health and nutrition, wanting to learn everything I could to prevent future issues.
I made a lot of changes in my diet and lifestyle. But I noticed that I still turned to food when stressed, only now it was more healthy foods.
I began to realize that this habit of eating for reasons other than hunger was a big problem for both my physical and emotional health. I didn’t want to rely on food to help myself cope or to distract myself anymore. I wanted to feel more in control and intentional with my eating.
I started paying more attention and noticing my tendency to reach for food whenever I was stressed, bored or procrastinating. I started changing my habits and my mindset around food and eating with the help of my own coaching and research in the field.
I finally learned how to break the habit of using food to solve my emotions, as well as how to eat in a way that I truly love that supports my health, and I can teach you how to do it too!
